Wendy Bird and her Band of Miscreants

Hello good people. We had a grand old time in San Francisco at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival Sept 30 - Oct 2. Wendy Bird gathered her Band of Miscreants (Geoff Hicks on drums, Barney Bentall on acoustic guitar and vocals, Eric Reed on electric guitar, Shari Ulrich on fiddle and vocals, Rob Becker on bass, Angela Harris on background vocals, and yours truly on guitar), to play the Porch Stage Saturday Oct 1st in sunny Golden Gate Park. The High Bar Gang (us without Geoff) made a surprise appearance at the end of Wendy's set, with the help of John Reischman showing us how it's done on his '24 Loar signed F-5 on "Over In the Gloryland". Let me tell you that made my day. On the Sunday, Wendy and the girls got to sing the last song of the festival with Emmylou Harris and others (thanks Maple for asking).

It was great to see so many familiar Vancouver faces enjoying themselves at the best festival anywhere. The band played great and we had a wonderful time through the entire weekend. Special thanks to our dear friends from Los Angeles Karen and John, who made the trek up and took some pictures (have a look).

More news as it happens!

The High Bar Gang

Hello music fans:

Wendy Bird will be singing with her band "The High Bar Gang" in February! It's quite exciting that we have two shows in a row! It's not easy getting all of these fine players together for a weekend of guaranteed fun times! "What does that mean" you ask? It means that we keep the fist fighting confined to the parking lot, just like all of our other shows! Joe Stanton and his very fine guitar playing and singing will join us at the Eagles Club, while our best friend Tom Taylor will join us hanging with the Hippies in Brackendale. Dress appropriately please! No shoes - no bluegrass!

Seymour Art Gallery events

Then coming up in March, Wendy Bird - and her "Band of Miscreants" - will be performing at the Seymour Art Gallery (4360 Gallant Avenue, North Vancouver) on Tuesday, March 29. Hello Good People,

Kim ClarkeWe here at Beaumont Classic Records heard last night that Kim Clarke, co-writer along with Jeff Hatcher of "The Curtains Close" and "Be Like That"on the Natural Wonder record, passed away Dec 30th 2010. Kim was kind enough to attend the Wendy Bird Record release party last April, flying himself out to Vancouver to visit with us and participate in the festivities. Before Kim moved to Ontario he was in many well known west coast bands including The Bonus Boys, Moccasin Telegraph, Way Out West, the Falcons, and Tokyo Joe. He was a wonderful songwriter, guitarist, photographer (see the gallery section) and most importantly all round great person. He will be missed.

January 3rd, 2011

Hello Everyone.

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season. Beaumont Classic Records artist Wendy Bird had a very busy fall with gigs all through Western Canada and San Francisco... In late September the debut shows of the "High Bar Gang" were held at the Eagles Club in North Vancouver, (The same venue we held Wendy's record release party....). It was nerve wracking and a lot of songs to learn but great fun and we are looking at presenting more shows in February, so stay tuned and check out the website.... Next Wendy and her 'crack band of miscreants' flew into San Francisco to play a set on Sunday Oct 3rd at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Our good friends Karen Walker and John Chamberlin flew up from their home in Altadena and Karen took the B/W group shot that can be seen in our gallery, (she asked us not to smile!). Many thanks to Warren Hellman and Dawn Holliday for inviting us down. By the way, the festival is an absolute must for any music fan. And folks it is free to the public! First weekend in October. This will be year number eleven. Just go!!!!

The rest of the year had Wendy on tour with Barney Bentall and the "Grand Cariboo Opry" with shows in and around Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta. Our good friends the "Hatcher-Briggs Band" flew our songstress out to Winnipeg for the release of their latest album, (which Wendy also sang on), before she rejoined the Opry for dates on Vancouver Island and a sold out grand finale show at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver in support of the Potluck Café Society, helping to raise enough money to supply 10,000 meals to those in need. Way to go Grand Cariboo Opry!

Also, Wendy was part of "Music Saves", an initiative for the Vancouver Adapted Music Society, which supports and promotes musicians with physical disabilities in the Metro Vancouver area. The video also features Odds, Jim Byrnes, Barney Bentall, Dustin Bentall, John Mann, Dan Mangan and many more. Watch the video here or at YouTube.

Christmas found Wendy yelling and waving her arms around a lot, mostly at Beaumont Classic Records owner, Colin Nairne, who spent the holidays hiding. Happy 2011 everyone!

Hello good people:

Our good friend and all round good guy Paul Baker, the fine engineer that recorded "Natural Wonder' for Wendy Bird has passed away today after being ill this past year. He will be fondly remembered by all who met him, most certainly by all of us who had the pleasure of working with him. Paul ran Bakerstreet Studios in our hometown of North Vancouver. I had the pleasure of working there many times, both as a producer and an engineer. Paul was supportive of the musical community in so many ways that it's impossible to count the favors any one of us might owe him. If you needed some particular piece of gear to finish something at home, he gave it to you. If you had something he needed for a session, you dropped it by, and it appeared back at your place when he was done. If you had limited funds to make a record, you went to Paul to make the deal. If you had more than that, you went to Paul to pay him back. The reason we have "Natural Wonder" was because he thought it was a great project that he wanted to be a part of, even when we had so little money to make that record. He did that all the time for many artists. I know lots of people that benefitted from his skill and talent, and they are thinking of Paul today.

In other news:

We have been as busy as beavers here at BCR headquarters rehearsing like mad for the upcoming shows. The High Bar Gang is sounding great and we are all filled with nervous excitement about our debut shows:

We have also been rehearsing with Jeff Hatcher for our appearance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, October 3. Also Elvis Costello mentions Wendy Bird in this interesting interview.

Two show announcements just for you:

The High Bar Gang's inception, sound and classic quality are led by the vision of Colin Nairne who states, "The only way I could hear this music was to get a band together and play it!"

  2. Oct 3, San Francisco, CA: Wendy Bird at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Wendy Bird plays the Porch Stage Sunday Oct 3rd at the 10th annual free festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco!

July 7th 2010

Hello fine people. I apologize for the following:

  1. The tardiness with which we here at Beaumont Classic Records have taken in updating the website.
  2. The sloppy pictures of the T-shirt model.
  3. Gig announcements

Explanations:

  1. I'm lazy, and I've been busy. But mostly I've been lazy. Our intrepid IT person "K", has asked several times for an update.
  2. I was running late and had to get going, so I grabbed a colleague and said "...wear this I need to take a picture..." and less than a minute later I was in my car heading home, hence the crumpled T-Shirt and the quizzical look on Alan.

I am no Yousuf Karsh*, that is for sure.

When Beaumont Classic Records artist Wendy Bird saw them she uttered, "Why do you even bother?...You are such a ****ing waste of time!" Needless to say, I will soon be taking the picture again, however, you get the idea about the shirts. Nothing fancy, just a T-shirt. There is still the wine stained one that is going for a discount...it's a size large with a red wine stain over it. Or you can make your own by buying a regular "Natural Wonder" T-Shirt then spilling your own wine all over it. Email me directly if you want the one on my desk.
  3. There are a couple of pending shows. Details to follow, so stand by....

Take care. Oh and we might have some video footage of parts of the release party... Not sure yet.

* Yousuf Karsh 1908 - 2002. A Canadian icon and a real photographer. Also I'm no James O'Mara, who is a master photographer and a dear friend.

April 20th 2010

Hello fine people. I would like to thank all the folks who came down to the official Beaumont Classic Records "Wendy Bird - Natural Wonder" release party on April 17th at the Starlight Room. Many thanks to all who showed up and it looked like everyone had a wonderful time. The evening started with a bang as Bob Kemmis delivered an opening set that had the place hopping. A very special shout out to all the fine players who formed the backing band that evening including: Craig Northey, Doug Elliott, Geoff Hicks, Shawn Soucy, Murray Atkinson, Dave Reimer, Barney Bentall, Rick Hopkins, Simon Kendall, Shari Ulrich and Jeff Hatcher. It was a good to have so many wonderful people all in the same room. Extra special thanks to Graham Tuson for mixing the band and the folks who sent Wendy flowers and special notes!

In other news:

I will have BCR T-shirts up in the store in a few days in case you are in need of one. These extra special shirts have the Beaumont Classic Records logo on the back and Wendy Bird Natural Wonder on the 'pocket side'. I also have one large T-shirt that a drunk person spilled wine on before disappearing into the crowd and it will be offered for sale at a substantial reduction. It kind of looks "tye dyed" but not really.

Upon hearing of Beaumont Classic Records founder Colin Nairne's dismay at seeing the spoiled goods, BCR recording artist Wendy Bird was heard to utter "...is he really going to sell that shitty T-Shirt with the wine on it? Really?" to which Mr. Nairne replied, "If I don't sell it, it's coming out of your royalties...."

April 8th 2010

Show sold out!

The Beaumont Classic Records release party for Wendy Bird's debut record "Natural Wonder" is officially SOLD OUT! Beaumont Classic Records owner Colin Nairne says "...it's going to be great, but I'd like to remind people, despite the rumors, there are no door prizes." Thanks to everyone who bought tickets and we look forward to seeing you there!

Wendy Bird gets her first number 1!

Hello everyone,

The good folks at CHRW 94.5 FM radio at the University of Western Ontario and their listeners have made Wendy Bird's "Natural Wonder" number 1 on their Folk/Roots/Blues chart. This is Wendy's first number 1, and she's very excited, now that Beaumont Classic Records owner Colin Nairne has proven this to her (see actual chart below). A tip of the hat to Mr. Kim Clarke, (our man for all things London Ontario related...), who facilitated the placement of the record into the program director's hands....

In other news, now that the Olympics are over, we will be looking at having our long overdue "release party" where people can come and actually watch her sing some songs and drink beer. Stay tuned as we will figure this out soon. If you sign up to the mailing list I'll let you know when and where the event will be held.

Hello Winter Olympic fans! Beaumont Classic Records is headquartered in Vancouver, the home of the 2010 Winter Olympics and the city is simply buzzing with activities to occupy the thousands upon thousands of tourists that have traveled far and wide to attend the games. Beaumont Classic Recording artist Wendy Bird has already participated in one 'Olympic Flame' event at Whistler and she found the whole experience very exciting. So exciting in fact, she bought an Olympic approved sweater!

Meanwhile, I'm finding new ways of driving to the office through streets strangled by road closures and surly security forces, so I can remind you that Valentine's Day is upon us and the perfect gift for your loved one is Wendy Bird's "Natural Wonder", available only through our website!

Seriously though, no shows to announce until after the Olympics!! It's too insane to try and book our long awaited 'Record Release Party'. Soon though.....Have a good February.

Jan 15 2010

Hello good people. I hope that you all had a very nice holiday. The staff of Beaumont Classic Records gathered on Boxing Day* to share a drink and have a few laughs. We managed to avoid a repeat of last years episode of "fist fighting in the parking lot", and except for one dog bite, all is good.

Beaumont Classic Recording artist Wendy Bird managed to make two "Top Ten" lists this year. Tom Harrison from Vancouver's "The Province" and Jeff Robson host of Winnipeg radio CJUM 101.5's "Tell the Band to go Home", both had listed Wendy's album, "Natural Wonder". A good feeling for sure.

The Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver in February. Barney Bentall and the Grand Cariboo Opry featuring Wendy Bird, will be playing at Whistler BC in the Village Square on February 5th at 3:30PM to welcome the Olympic Torch. Please check out the GCO website for more info.

*Boxing Day, or Saint Stephens Day, is originally a British holiday. It allowed the gentry only half a day to abuse the staff. The other half was used for fist fighting. Read all about in Lie-pedia....

Please help the people of Haiti. There are several ways of doing so - mostly it's money that they need. Time to step up people!

Dec 7 2009

Beaumont Classic Records recording artist Wendy Bird has finished an absolutely wonderful string of Western Canadian dates with Barney Bentall's "Grand Cariboo Opry" and we here at corporate headquarters would like to thank Barney and all the fantastic musicians involved. I might add that some of the younger musicians appearing in the Opry have become pretty big wheels in the industry, and I applaud their commitment to what has become a yearly tradition. Please visit the 'GCO' site to find out more about it!

Please sign up to the mailing list for upcoming tour dates!

Speaking of yearly traditions, the Beaumont Classic Records shameless marketing department has suggested that purchasing a copy of Wendy Bird's "Natural Wonder" might actually make you feel better about the holidays. I know, as founder of this enterprise, I feel pretty darn good when we sell CDs!

Lastly, Wendy donates a portion of her sales to the Scotty Hard Trust. I'm hoping that you can all spare a few dollars and help those people, places and things that you feel need it.

Happy Holidays from the entire staff of Beaumont Classic Records.

November 17 2009

Beaumont Classic Records corporate headquarters learned that Tom Harrison, music critic at the Vancouver Province newspaper, picked Wendy Bird's "Natural Wonder" as "CD of the week" on Nov 10th, and Toronto based music writer Paul Cantin blogs about Wendy Bird in "No Depression" magazine, while producer Craig Northey apparently mentions the record every now and again on his "Twitter" (when he's not telling everyone when he last drank coffee or some such silly shit).

Wendy has been doing shows with Barney Bentall and the Grand Cariboo Opry, which she reports are a heck of a lot of fun, including having the great Art Bergmann sing "Sin City" with them in Airdrie, Alberta! There are more shows coming up out here on the British Columbia south coast which you can peruse under the heading "Shows". There will be all sorts of special musical guests and an opportunity to buy Wendy's CD at these shows! Just remember to stick to the rules folks! Keep the fist fights out in the parking lot..... and only after the show!

Lastly folks, we are looking into the future at when and where we might hold an actual "Record Release Party". Perhaps early next year. It sure isn't going to happen this year. There might be one here in Vancouver and another in Winnipeg, where Jeff Hatcher, writer of the material on Wendy's record, resides, however the bureaucracy at Beaumont Classic Records moves very slowly, so if you are even remotely interested, please sign the email list so we can let you know if it will happen. Beaumont Classic Records founder Colin Nairne has been known to say these events are ...'difficult to manage', while Beaumont Classic Records artist Wendy Bird calls Mr. Nairne '....cheap....'

Natural Wonder

October 24 2009

Beaumont Classic Records is pleased to announce the release of "Natural Wonder" by Vancouver singer Wendy Bird!

Recorded mostly in true "Wrecking Crew" style, several of Vancouver's top rated studio musicians crammed into Bakerstreet Studios on a rainy February day to drink beer, eat curry and stare at a jumble of poorly written chord charts while listening to producer Craig Northey's vain attempts to direct the madness from the safety of the control room. The results are stunning! Wendy's hauntingly beautiful voice soars as she sings her way through twelve songs written by Jeff Hatcher, Billy Cowsill and Kim Clarke. Featuring special musical appearances by Colin James, Barney Bentall, Odds, Steve Dawson and Elvis Costello, this record is the real deal!

In other news:

Here at corporate headquarters, the marketing committee have decided to forgo any other web based schemes like "Facebook", "Twitter" or "Myspace" and ordered its IT department to concentrate solely "on this site alone".

Beaumont Classic Records founder Colin Nairne has described these other sites as "...horseshit..." Beaumont Classic Records artist Wendy Bird has described Mr. Nairne as "...lazy...".

Shows

Wendy Bird is proud to be a part of Barney Bentall's Grand Cariboo Opry. Here is a list of dates where you can catch her performing along with Barney and a host of other fabulous musicians! For more info on Canada's very own 'Opry' please go to www.grandcaribooopry.com.
